![]() A look at Scottsdale based Girl Friday,LLC with owner operator Kari Holt. I had a chance to sit down with Kari Holt and learn a little about her business. When did you start your business? 2007 What made you want to start this business? I had a desire to help people in need and volunteering wasn’t really an option being a single mother raising three young boys and having to work full time to make a living, so I thought "why couldn’t I do both" and that’s when I came up with the idea to start Girl Friday. What was the toughest thing you went through when opening? I’m pretty entrepreneur minded so it was exciting to start and launch something new. I would have to say the toughest thing was the costs associated with advertising and all the networking events. It adds up pretty fast so I had to rely mostly on word of mouth. If you had to start over from day one what would you have done differently? Nothing What is the toughest part about having a business in 2016? The only thing I find tough about owning a business is getting the word out to the masses so they know who to call in order to get the help they need. If a customer was to choose between your business and three others in your field, why should they try yours first? Girl Friday pretty much has the niche in the market, however, from what our clients tell us, they would tell you what an amazing company I have and how wonderful my team is. Girl Friday is truly the one-stop-shop solution because our team members are all trustworthy, caring, professional and well-rounded in our skillsets in order to help people who need professional, domestic or senior assistance. What’s unique about Girl Friday too, when I assign one of my clients an assistant it will be the same assistant each time they use our services. This builds a long lasting, trusting relationships and also keeps things organized and manageable for all involved. What is the number one way you are currently bringing in new customers? Google searches and word of mouth. Has the Internet played a big roll in your business as it has become more prevelant? Yes If you had to look six months to a year down the road, where would you like to see your business be? I would like to see my business doubled or tripled. There are so many people who need help on a temporary or part-time basis but they just don’t know where to find it. Girl Friday provides assistance for as low as two hours each visit. It can be as simple as running an errand and picking up groceries, taking their car in for maintenance or bookkeeping 4 hours a week for a small business owner. It’s all about letting people know there is help out there. As an owner of a small business are you still working in the business, managing it, or now have passive ownership? I personally still assist a couple of my original clients each week/month and I love working on short-term projects but I have built a wonderful team of amazing women who do a fantastic job assisting Girl Friday’s clients. And why? Every book I have ever read on why a small business fails is because the owner works it instead of grows it.
